The subject of this doctoral dissertation is the analysis of the origins of tabloid journalism in Serbia, investigated through a case study of the local newspaper Odjek Šumadije (Kragujevac, 1936–1941), in order to study the social, political, and cultural circumstances under which one of the first local media outlets with tabloid characteristics emerged in the interwar period. The primary objective of the research is the scientific contextualization of Odjek Šumadije within the development of Serbian local journalism during the interwar period, with a focus on identifying the content and stylistic characteristics of tabloid texts. Concurrently, the research encompasses an analysis of the characteristics of journalistic genres used in this media context. Proceeding from the premise that media actively participate in constituting social reality and are subject to political, cultural, and social influences, the research also includes an analysis of the socio-historical framework in which this newspaper was created. Finally, based on the definition of the newspaper as an independent informative outlet and the observed tabloid features, the paper aims to evaluate the journalistic functions fulfilled by Odjek Šumadije, comparing them with the fundamental journalistic functions (informing, educating, and entertaining), as defined in European media theory. Based on the above, the following research questions and hypotheses were derived. The research questions are: 1) To what extent is each of the three mentioned journalistic functions present, and which is dominant?, 2) To what extent do the published contents in Odjek Šumadije possess the characteristics of local media?, 3) To what extent do the texts of Odjek Šumadije represent a reflection of the social life of that time?, 4) Which elements of tabloid reporting are present in the texts of Odjek Šumadije?, 5) In which genres do tabloid contents appear most frequently?, 6) What are the linguistic-stylistic characteristics of texts with tabloid content, and to what extent are the theory and technique of writing journalistic text represented? The main research hypothesis is: The characteristics of tabloid journalism are present in the reporting style of Odjek Šumadije, which is why it can be viewed as a precursor to Serbian tabloids. The auxiliary hypotheses are: 1) A journalistic form intruding into the private sphere of civic life – stories about individual personal experiences (human-interest) – is practiced in the texts of Odjek Šumadije; 2) The language and writing style of Odjek Šumadije are simplified, closer to conversational than to formal journalistic style; 3) The socio-historical conditions in which Odjek Šumadije waspublished influenced its editorial policy and manner of reporting. The research results unequivocally confirm the main hypothesis that distinct characteristics of tabloid journalism are present in the reporting style of Odjek Šumadije, positioning this newspaper as a precursor to Serbian tabloids. Quantitative-qualitative analysis established a dominant representation of topics from the private lives of individuals (42.30%), most often presented through hybrid genres and the use of sensationalist, emotionally charged language close to a conversational style. Furthermore, it was proven that the newspaper's editorial policy was strongly determined by the restrictive socio-historical context and state censorship, while the content simultaneously provides valuable insight into the social dynamics and culture of everyday life in interwar Kragujevac. This dissertation thereby scientifically identifies a previously unexamined segment of the genesis of tabloidization in the Serbian media space, pointing to specific media practices of the local press.
