The research aims at understanding the importance ofhuman and financial capital for the profitable operation of small andmedium-sized enterprises in the Republic of Serbia. The primaryaim of this doctoral dissertation is, on the one hand, to examine thestrength and type of relationship between human and financialcapital and, on the other hand, to examine whether human andfinancial capital are truly the key determinants of the businesssuccess of these types of business entities. The theoretical partparticularly aims to determine the importance and role of small andmedium-sized enterprises in the growth and development of aparticular economy; additionally, it aims at identifying the internaldeterminants which are of crucial importance for the high businessprofitability of small and medium-sized enterprises. The empiricalpart of this doctoral dissertation presents a detailed analysis and anexamination of interdependence of human and financial capital ofsmall and medium-sized enterprises in the Republic of Serbia andthe achieved profitability and overall business success. The aim isto determine the possible causes of unprofitability of these types ofbusinesses.The theoretical part of the doctoral dissertation firstly dealswith the concept of business profitability by pointing out the mostimportant internal and external factors that determine it. Then, itpresents small and medium-sized enterprises as business entitieswith all the features that make these types of businessesdistinguishable from large business systems. By understanding theirmultiplex importance and with the aim of enhancing theiroperations, we turn to the analysis of the effect of internal factorsonto their profitability; here special attention is placed on theanalysis of human and financial capital as key determinants ofbusiness success of small and medium-sized enterprises.The empirical part of this doctoral dissertation focuses on the researchand the analysis of internal factors of profitability of small andmedium-sized enterprises in the Republic of Serbia in the previoustime period. The research is conducted using secondary sources ofdata by forming a model which confirms the assumptions that humanand financial capital of small and medium-sized enterprises (out of allinternal factors) have the greatest effect on the profitability of thesebusiness entities.
