Within this dissertation, synthesis and investigation of the new multifunctional materials were done. Nanostructural powders, based on mixed strontium and gadolinium oxide (SrGd2O4) as matrix doped with rare earth ions (Dy3+, Sm3+, Yb3+, Er3+, Ho3+, Tm3+), were prepared. Combustion synthesis promoted with glycine was chosen to be the appropriate method for sample preparation, thus, optimization of the synthesis method was done in order to obtain powders with desirable characteristics. Five systems were prepared, each with a different dopant ion („down“-convertors) or a combination of two dopant ions („up“-convertors).Complete and thorough physico-chemical characterization was performed on each sample within one system. The influence of dopant concentration on structural, morphological, surface, and optical properties of as-synthesized material was examined. A particular accent was given to the investigation of the luminescence properties, therefore, quantum yield and luminescence lifetime were calculated for the „up“-convertors.As-synthesized samples were analyzed to be used in photocatalytic processes for water purification, more precisely, for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes as model pollutants. „Down“-convertors were used in test reactions for photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B, whilst „up“-convertors were used in test reactions for photocatalytic degradation of Methylene blue. The mechanism of the photocatalytic reactions was also examined, as well as the influence of selected process parameters, in order to optimize the photocatalytic process.The obtained results indicate that materials with good luminescence properties also possess good photocatalytic activity, pointing to the successful synthesis of new multifunctional materials.
