Analysing the main motives in work activity, both in theory and practice, there are five main motives for work activity that are determined: motive of benefit (which consists of obtaining an award for work); motive of safety (satisfying the need for avoiding the danger which appears in work environment); motive of comfort (the tendency to choose an easier way to perform work assignments); motive of satisfaction (satisfaction with work results) and motive of levelling (it satisfies the need to act in accordance with the accepted way of action in a work group, with the tendency not to be worse than others). All these motives are present in every human work activity. However, their hierarchy depends both on the environment where a person lives and works and an individual as well, since individuals have or they can have their own hierarchy of motives which expresses dynamic core of their personalities. The overall objective of the research was to gain insight into the structure of employees’ motivation for safety and health at work in the context of professional risk management and increase of productivity, as well as the practical assessment of methods and instruments that will measure the motivation for occupational safety. For the purpose of the research, the modified scale for measuring of occupational safety motivation has been used whose application had already been confirmed in practice in the form of questionnaire which has been handed to examinees from companies: “Kontejnerski transport i generalni tereti“, “Port of Adria“ and “Luka Bar“. The study included 386 respondents. In processing of the collected data of this empirical research, the following statistical methods have been used: frequency; percentage; cumulative percentage; rank; standard deviation; coefficient of correlation; paired sample T test; ABC diagram. The results indicate the nature of the hierarchy of motives and determine the factors that affect the motivation of workers for occupational safety and health in the context of professional risk management. Also, the results unequivocally indicate that workers in workplaces with increased risk have highly expressed motivation for occupational safety.
