In this doctoral dissertation, the antifungal activity of essential oils derivedfrom plant species belonging to the families Lamiaceae (Satureja montana,Thymus vulgaris, Origanum vulgare), Asteraceae (Inula helenium,Helichrysum italicum), and Rutaceae (Citrus aurantium, Citrus aurantifolia,Citrus limon, Citrus paradisi) was investigated, with the aim of identifyingpotential new agents for the treatment of candidоsis. Experiments wereconducted on two sets of human clinical Candida isolates: the first setconsisted of isolates from various infections, while the second set includedvulvovaginal isolates.The study examined the antifungal and antivirulence potential of the oils,including antibiofilm activity, inhibition of germ tube formation, reduction ofphospholipase production, as well as their interactions with nystatin and themutual interactions between individual oils.Chemical composition analysis was performed, and minimal inhibitoryconcentrations (MICs) were determined, revealing significant anti-Candidaactivity: 0.312–2.500 mg/mL (Lamiaceae), 0.009–5.00 mg/mL (Asteraceae),and 0.009–10.00 mg/mL (Rutaceae). The oils demonstrated the ability toreduce biofilm formation at MIC and ½ MIC. The highest activity against thefirst set of isolates was shown by I. helenium oil, while C. aurantium oilexhibited the greatest efficacy against the second set. Both oils significantlyreduced germ tube formation and phospholipase production, indicating apronounced antivirulence potential.These findings contribute to a better understanding of essential oils’ effectagainst human clinical Candida isolates and their capacity to reducevirulence factors, highlighting the possibility of their application as adjunctivetherapy for candidоsis.
