Adhesive bonding is a modern and flexible joining technology that offers numerous advantages over traditional methods. The versatility of bonding is demonstrated by its ability to join different types of materials, ease of application, and potential to reduce production costs while maintaining satisfactory mechanical properties of the joint. Proper preparation of the surfaces to be joined is a key prerequisite for achieving high mechanical strength in bonded joints.This doctoral dissertation presents the results of experimental testing of bonded joints, focusing on the analysis of the influence of different surface preparation methods for stainless steel X5CrNi18-10 and aluminium alloy AlMg3 (EN AW 5754) on the strength of bonded joints. Mechanical preparations include treating the surfaces with an abrasive fibrous Scotch-Brite pad and P180 grit sandpaper, creating four different textures at two different depths on the surfaces using a fibre pulse laser, and laser cleaning of the surfaces using a portable laser for cleaning small areas. High-strength epoxy adhesives were used to create the bonded joints: two types of two-component and one type of one-component epoxy adhesive.To ensure a well-bonded joint, the wetting properties of the prepared substrates were tested by measuring the contact angle and surface roughness, while the surfaces were analysed using optical and SEM microscopes. Chemical analysis of the surfaces was conducted, along with investigations into the influence of static loading on two characteristic types of bonded joints (single-lap and peel test), and the influence of cyclic loading on single-lap joints. The cross-section of the bonded joint and the failure mode of the single-lap joint were also analysed. The experimental results were compared with the results obtained by numerical analysis. Based on the comparison of all the results, clear conclusions were drawn at the end of the dissertation regarding the influence of surface preparation on the strength of bonded joints.
