Opis (eng)

Previous studies in the modern Dubrovnik drama research are characterized to a greater extent by the literary-historical approach while the more comprehensive literary-theoretical analysis lacks. The subject of this research is the relation between politics and ethics in the modern Dubrovnik drama, i.e. in dramatic texts arising of the period from the mid-19th to the first decades of the 20th century in Dubrovnik, the authors of which are people of Dubrovnik, and which are based on the old Dubrovnik literature, on the prevailing sense of particularism, and in the changed social conditions. First of all, we are interested in the way in which ideology influences the shaping of the dramatic works literary world, genre structure and characters, and in what way it relates to ethical opinions set forth in the plays. The analysis shows that the drama texts rely on the old Dubrovnik literature regarding the motives and the topos of Dubrovnik's political culture. The novelty compared to the old Dubrovnik literature is Yugoslav ideology, which is represented in line with the changed historical circumstances and the loss of freedom of Dubrovnik in the plays. Along with the voices of power, the voices of ethical dispute are present in the works, questioning the legitimization of vengeance and human sacrifice in the name of ideology. The texts which lack this ethical voice refer to a political discourse of low artistic value.
