Opis (srp)

This dissertation investigates the grammatical category of gender and agreement in Serbian as a heritage language in a German-speaking environment, with particular focus on adjective–noun gender agreement. It is assumed that, under bilingual conditions, the gender system may display specific properties due to reduced input and the influence of the dominant societal language. The aim of the study is to examine the stability and variability of the gender system in heritage speakers of Serbian and to determine the extent to which it differs from that of monolingual speakers in Serbia. The empirical part of the study is based on a contrastive experimental design involving 60 participants aged 6 to 11 – 30 bilingual speakers of Serbian as a heritage language in Germany (Hesse) and 30 monolingual speakers of Serbian living in Serbia (Niš). The study was conducted online using an elicited production task. Both real and nonce nouns were tested. Canonical nouns included masculine nouns ending in a consonant, feminine nouns ending in the vowel a, and neuter nouns ending in the vowels o and e. Non-canonical nouns comprised masculine nouns ending in the vowel a or in o and e, as well as feminine nouns ending in a consonant. The effects of noun familiarity, canonicity, exposure to Serbian, and age were analyzed. The results show that heritage speakers exhibit a stable system of agreement in cases involving canonical and morphologically transparent nouns, whereas greater variability emerges with non-canonical forms. A strong positive correlation was found between exposure to Serbian and accuracy in gender assignment, while differences between heritage and monolingual speakers were limited. These findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of grammatical category acquisition in heritage languages and haveimportant implications for the teaching of Serbian as a heritage language in diaspora contexts
