The improvement of sustainable mobility in urban areas implies thereduction of motorized traffic and the development of infrastructure thatsupports alternative modes of transport, such as cycling. The incorporationof cycling infrastructure within already developed urban areas plays a keyrole in promoting cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. However, theexisting urban environment requires careful and systematic analysis ofcurrent infrastructure, as well as an assessment of the possibilities forpositioning cycling facilities.Within this dissertation, an algorithm was developed for determiningthe optimal position and type of cycling surface within the existing crosssectionof an urban street. The algorithm consists of several phases,including data collection, classification, and analysis of geometric andtraffic characteristics of urban streets. The algorithm was tested on 21streets in the city of Niš, including access, collector, and arterial roads.Data on geometric and traffic elements of the analyzed streets wereobtained from the Urban Planning Institute of the City of Niš.The analysis of results showed that the algorithm performedefficiently and proposed a type and position of cycling surface for 18streets, while 3 streets did not meet the required criteria. The algorithmalso demonstrated that most of the analyzed streets, despite spatiallimitations, have potential for the integration of cycling traffic. Theapplication of the algorithm enabled systematic and objective decisionmakingand solution development in the planning of new or reconstructionof existing urban streets.
