The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to examine the process ofpolitical rapprochement between Serbia and Bulgaria in the periodfrom 1908 to 1912. The research focuses on the course of diplomaticnegotiations between the two countries, with particular emphasis onresolving the Macedonian question, which represented the mainobstacle to closer relations. Special attention is devoted to the roles ofkey actors — the Serbian diplomat and prime minister MilovanMilovanović, and the Bulgarian prime minister Ivan Geshov —whose actions were crucial in building mutual trust between Sofiaand Belgrade. The study provides a detailed analysis of negotiationsconcerning political and military cooperation, as well as the attitudesof state, political, and intellectual elites in both countries. It alsoexamines the influence of the Albanian question on Bulgarian-Serbian relations, as well as the geopolitical ambitions of the GreatPowers — primarily Russia, which supported rapprochement, andAustria-Hungary, which opposed it. The Annexation Crisis of 1908 isidentified as a turning point in the relations between the twocountries, as it opened space for mutual cooperation and future jointaction. Through the examination of available archival materials andrelevant literature, the study concludes that friendly relations betweenSerbia and Bulgaria were a fundamental prerequisite for the creationof the Balkan Alliance. The compromise regarding Macedonia provedto be the key factor in reaching an agreement. The treaty betweenSerbia and Bulgaria represented the main link in the effort to liberatethe Balkan Peninsula from the Ottoman Empire.
