The doctoral dissertation is focused on investigating the phytochemicalcomposition of Barbarea vulgaris from Serbia, a member of theBrassicaceae family known for its remarkable intraspecific chemicalvariability. Although this species has previously been the subject ofnumerous studies, populations from our region remain insufficientlydescribed, which highlights the importance of this research within thebroader context of phytochemistry and chemotaxonomy. Specialemphasis is placed on glucosinolates – metabolites essential in plantdefense, recognized as a potential source of pharmaceutically andnutritionally valuable compounds. The research includes the isolation and analysis of essential oil andautolysates of B. vulgaris, identification of glucosinolate degradationproducts, as well as the isolation or synthesis of selected compoundsfor their chemical and biological characterization. Using modernanalytical techniques (GC-FID, GC-MS, NMR, UV-Vis, IR) incombination with biological assays, the antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, and antioxidant properties of the obtained molecules were evaluated. The scientific contribution of this work lies in expanding theknowledge of chemical variability within local populations of B.vulgaris, identifying potentially new chemotypes, and obtainingcompounds that may serve as a basis for the development of newbioactive agents.
