Introduction. Timely and accurate diagnosis of salivary gland tumors is ofparamount importance in maxillofacial surgery, especially considering theincrease in the number of these tumors worldwide in the last ten years.Thermal imaging, as a non-invasive and painless method, represents achallenge for research and application in the diagnosis of salivary glandtumors in order to complement the spectrum of auxiliary diagnosticmethods. Objective: The main objective of this doctoral dissertation is toexamine the possibility and importance of using a thermal imaging cameraas a reliable auxiliary diagnostic tool in a specific group of patients withsalivary gland tumors. Material and methods. The dissertation is aprospective clinical study conducted at the maxillofacial surgerydepartment of the Clinic for Dental Medicine in Niš in the period from01.01. 2021 to 31.12. 2023. During the clinical trial, 235 subjects wereincluded, divided into two large groups. The first group consisted of 95patients with tumor changes in the salivary glands, while the second groupincluded 140 subjects without manifest changes in the salivary glands(control group). Results and conclusions. There are strong positivecorrelations with a high statistically significant difference in temperaturebetween the tumor-affected and unaffected side (tp<0.001), i.e. the tumorprocess significantly increases the temperature in the region in which it islocated. Temperatures measured above malignant tumors are statisticallysignificantly higher than temperatures measured above benign tumors(p=0.010). The conclusions showed that registering the temperaturedifference using a thermal imaging camera can be a significant indicator ofthe presence/absence of a tumor, and the thermal imaging camera itself mayhave the potential to become an auxiliary diagnostic tool in the detection ofsalivary gland tumors.
