Kontekstualizacije obrazovnih sadržaja narodne književnosti
This dissertation explores the position and role of folk literaturewithin educational cycles, curricula, and syllabi in primary andsecondary schools, as well as in the teaching of Serbian as a nonnativelanguage. Although folk literature, as the oldest form ofliterary expression, constitutes a vital part of our cultural identity, itspresence in education remains disproportionate to its culturalsignificance. The study emphasises the pedagogical potential offolklore material and the importance of its contextualisation incontemporary education.The research examines the representation of folk literature intextbooks approved by the Ministry of Education across all threeeducational cycles, as well as its role in teaching Serbian as a foreignlanguage. In addition, it analyses records of folk literature indifferent cultural and historical contexts, from Vuk’s collections toethnographic and ethnomusicological sources from the nineteenth tothe twenty-first century, to demonstrate their relevance for theformation of teaching content.Methodologically, the dissertation combines historical andcomparative approaches with an interdisciplinary perspective,drawing on folklore studies, ethnology, literary theory, andpedagogy. Special attention is given to the interplay between textualand extratextual elements, as well as to the multilayered character ofthe folklore corpus, which encompasses polytheistic andmonotheistic concepts, archetypal structures, collective patterns, andsyncretic forms.The findings underscore the need for a more comprehensive andsystematic approach to folk literature in education, highlighting thevalue of understanding it in both authentic and adapted contexts.Conceived as a dynamic and living cultural phenomenon, folkliterature has the potential to foster critical thinking, culturalawareness, and identity formation among students in the moderneducational system.
