This doctoral dissertation addresses the growing risk of wildfires inSerbia, which has been intensified by climate change. The research isgrounded in the identified lack of reliable data on the flammability offresh plant material typical of Serbia’s forest ecosystems, which isessential for understanding and predicting wildfire behavior. For the purposes of the research, an experimental setup was developedand applied, integrating a mass loss calorimeter for determining heatrelease rate and an FTIR gas analyzer for real-time measurement ofcombustion products. This approach enabled a comprehensive analysisof ignition and combustion processes under controlled laboratoryconditions. The study systematically examined the influence of key factors on theflammability of dominant coniferous and broadleaf species. It analyzedthe effects of moisture content, ignition type (piloted and non-piloted),and levels of incident heat flux on combustion dynamics and gasemissions. An integrated assessment was also conducted on theinfluence of morphological traits (leaf/needle size, thickness, anddensity) and chemical characteristics (content of terpenes, alkanes, andother compounds) on flammability parameters. A notablemethodological contribution is the analysis of measurement reliabilityand repeatability depending on the configuration of sample holders. The results demonstrated a clear relationship between the analyzedfactors and vegetation behavior during fire exposure. It was found thatchemical composition predominantly influences the flammability ofconiferous species, while morphological characteristics and moisturecontent are critical for broadleaf species. The dissertation establishesan important database that can be used to improve wildfire spreadmodels, support preventive planning, and enhance forest ecosystemmanagement, thus directly contributing to wildfire protection in Serbia.
