This paper investigates the potential of an integrative approach inteaching Serbian language to learners in lower grades of primaryschool. The aim is to determine its impact on acquired knowledgequality and retention.The theoretical framework of this study explores the concepts ofteaching, integrative teaching, and the application of the integrativeapproach in teaching Serbian. The conceptual definition segmentfocuses on the concept and importance of teaching, its development,and types of teaching. The origin and characteristics of integrativeteaching were investigated, pointing to its opportunities in teachingthe mother tongue, supported by specific examples. An analysis ofteaching programs for lower grades of primary school revealednumerous integration opportunities for the Serbian language and othersubjects. To evaluate the effectiveness of the integrative approach, anexperimental study was conducted in two primary schools inObrenovac (Primary School "Jovan Jovanović Zmaj" and PrimarySchool "Posavski Partizani") involving 171 fourth-grade studentsduring the school year 2020/2021. Additionally, questionnaires wereadministered to teachers and students to gather their perspectives onthe integrative approach.The analysis of the teaching programs showed that there are manyopportunities to connect the Serbian language curriculum with othersubjects. The results of our experiment indicate that students wholearned Serbian using an integrated approach performed better interms of knowledge quality and retention than those who learnedusing the traditional method. Additionally, both teachers and studentshad positive opinions about the integrated approach, highlighting itsbenefits, such as increased motivation, independence, and studentengagement.
