The research in this dissertation focuses on modeling selected parameters of landfill leachate quality, aiming to create a qualitative and quantitative basis for assessing their impact on receiving water bodies. The dissertation includes an analysis of the leachate generation processes, as well as the transformations that landfill leachates undergo within the landfill body and in the recipient. The study conducted modeling of the migration rate and composition of leachates, followed by a comparative analysis between the quantity and composition of leachates at sanitary landfills (real case scenario, with a protective barrier) and unsanitary landfills (worst case scenario, without a protective barrier). The dissertation uses the LandSim software modeling method, which is designed for modeling the composition of landfill leachates, simulating the movement of landfill leachates, and analyzing their impact on receiving water bodies. Qualitative risk assessment calculations of specific landfill performances were conducted based on the infiltration rate at the landfill, characteristics of protective barriers, and the size of the landfill body. Risk assessment elements include the source of contamination (deposited waste), impermeable (protective) barriers, and the recipient. The scientific and social contribution of the dissertation is reflected in modeling landfill performance, highlighting that landfills without protective barriers show significantly higher concentrations of components in the leachate, with substantial impact on the recipients compared to landfills with a protective barrier. By defining the migration rate of leachates at sanitary and unsanitary landfills, it has been unequivocally demonstrated that a significantly larger amount of leachate passes through the base of an unsanitary landfill compared to a sanitary landfill. The results of the dissertation indicate an increased level of risk for unsanitary landfills to the receiving water bodies during the critical years of landfill operation, after 5, 10 and 30 years. On the other hand, in the case of sanitary landfills, an increased level of risk was recorded in criticalyears, after 300, 700 and 1500 years of landfill operation. The contribution of the dissertation in the field of modeling selected parameters at different time intervals of landfill operation leads to great importance for the optimization of the monitoring system in different phases of landfill aging.
